Require lookup value

I have a lookup column (Category) and we want it required, however with a lookup drop down there is already a value in the field (first one alphabetically from lookup list), and that is causing some issues.

Is there a way to force a selection – either by making it blank and having the default value empty, or we added a value for “_select value” to force the issue but the client wants it required and not equal to _select value. Is there a way to do this?

Hi,
If you set the field as optional in the list settings and use DFFS to set it required, you should get the desired result as the first optiosn “(None)” will not be a valid selection.
